Impossible?
Money, time, resistance, health, fear — the barriers to sailing the world, and why Life Warriors fight for the outcome anyway.
We mentioned in another post that we’d touch on some of the barriers to overcoming your goal. We’ll assume you are here because you too want to sail the world and live a life of adventure with your family. So what are some of the obvious barriers? Money. Time. Resistance. Health. Fear. There are others, but those are the main ones. Let’s talk about money first.
Money: If you have a million dollars, you’ll spend it. If you have $100,000 you’ll spend that. People spend what they can afford. Don’t measure yourself to others. Check out the YouTubers living this lifestyle. Some have extremely nice catamarans; others have a small monohull resurrected from the graveyard. The two things they have in common: (1) they are having fun, and (2) the view — the view is the same no matter the size of the boat.
When it comes to money, the truth is your heart is where you spend your money. So where do you spend your money today? Are you saving for this adventure, or driving luxury cars, drinking Starbucks, and eating out all the time? Some of you can afford this lifestyle right now. If that is the case, skip ahead to time. But for those holding back because you think you can’t afford this — think again.
Most people reading this can probably readjust their lifestyle and buy an affordable monohull for around $70,000. It definitely will not win any beauty contests and likely will need cleaning and repairs, but it gets you in the water sooner. If you can do the repairs yourself, even better — you’ll save a ton and could probably find a cheaper boat.
“Okay, fair — but we can’t afford food, fuel, insurance, etc.” Fair enough. At the end of the day only you know your situation. We do know people who wanted it badly enough they fought to get it. True Life Warriors. Many people figure the average cruising lifestyle around $25,000/yr. You’d be living high on the hog at $50,000/yr. So if you don’t have $25k/yr to fund the lifestyle, how do you earn it? There are jobs you can do virtually — copywriting, website design, online store. And in-person trades — cleaning hulls, diesel repair, babysitting, etc. The point is, if you want it bad enough, you’ll get creative.
And that is what being a Life Warrior is about. Only you will fight for the outcome you desire. If you want different, fight for it. You own your outcome.
